Senior Dreams Come True Grants First Wish of 2023

Linda D., an East End senior, found herself in a difficult situation when her refrigerator stopped working. After recently losing her husband to a years-long battle with cancer, the inconvenience of a broken freezer filled with spoiled defrosted food was intolerable.

Cona Elder Law partnered with the Family Service League to “Adopt a Senior” as part of its own charitable foundation, Senior Dreams Come True™, a signature program of Cona Elder Law Charitable Events which grants wishes to low-income seniors in need. Senior Dreams Come True™ purchased a new refrigerator and had it delivered to Linda’s home, making her wish the first to be granted in 2023.

Senior Dreams Come True™ a 501(c)(3) non-profit, was launched in 2007 and has granted wishes for dozens of low-income seniors in need from communities throughout Nassau and Suffolk, helping seniors meet basic needs to fulfilling life long dreams.

Melissa Negrin-Wiener, a Senior Partner at Cona Elder Law, visited with Linda and only left after making sure the installation was successful and any issues were resolved.

“Many older adults with limited means go without the things we take for granted,” said Ms. Negrin-Wiener. “When we Adopt a Senior, we get the privilege of seeing how small kindnesses can have a great impact on our older neighbors on Long Island. By fulfilling wishes, we also let folks know there are people who care about them and all they need to do is reach out.”

Prior wishes granted include plane fares to bring families together, home improvements and repairs, modifications to allow for wheelchair accessibility and chair lifts, dental and medical treatment not covered by insurance, hearing aids, prescription drug coverage (including Medicare doughnut hole coverage), transportation to important events, and more.

Wishes are granted on a revolving basis throughout the year. Eligibility is limited to Long Islanders 65 and over with a household income of $1,500 or less per month for an individual or $2,000 or less per month for a couple. Wish Request forms can be obtained by visiting www.conaelderlaw.com or calling 631.390.5000.
