Press Release – Conference on Elder Care Set For May 8

An elder-care conference featuring more than 25 industry experts is set for May 8, from 5-8:30 p.m. at the Hilton Long Island in Melville.

This year marks the sixth annual Cona Elder Law Caregiver Conference, and it will include discussions on the “loneliness epidemic,” with insights about tackling isolation, care needs and finances in senior living.

The event is free for caregivers.

“Loneliness has been declared a public health epidemic by the U.S. surgeon general because it reportedly leads to an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, and depression,” Jennifer Cona, founder and managing partner of Melville-based Cona Elder Law, said in a news release about the conference.

Cona served as a featured panelist in the discussion on elder law on LIBN’s Health Care Forum on Tuesday.

“The majority of adults aged 65 and older report feeling lonely,” Cona said. “For this already vulnerable population, it is critical that we consider alternatives to aging-in-place.”

This year’s conference will focus on social senior living options and explore key differences between assisted living, independent living, continuing care retirement communities, New York State’s Assisted Living Program and Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Program, allowing different options for family and financial support.

Topics will also cover financing senior living, including asset protection planning, Medicaid planning and eligibility, and provide practical tips for determining the best way to finance needed care and services.
