On a recent Friday, Frederick Brewington, a Hempstead-based attorney, was in Melville, presenting a 90-minute discussion on advancing civil rights and social justice.

Brewington led the talk at Cona Elder Law, which hosted a Black History Month event.

“I’m encouraging you to [be] part of changing the environment that we live in, because we change it one person at a time,” Brewington said. He was sharing these insights with an audience of professionals, judges, community leaders, clients, lawyers, students and others committed to social justice, according to a news release about the event.

“And we make it contagious…that we treat each other with the human dignity that we’re entitled to, no matter who we are, whether or not we’re black or white, whether or not we’re gay or straight. Whether or not we got red hair or polka dot hair,” Brewington said.

Brewington is a longtime advocate for civil rights, voting rights and social justice who stands up against alleged employment discrimination and police misconduct. His expertise in litigation and policy reform is said to have made a lasting impact on communities throughout New York and beyond.

“We were proud to host Frederick K. Brewington for this important discussion,” Jennifer Cona, founder and managing partner of Cona Elder Law, said in the news release.

“His work in advancing civil rights and assisting the underserved and under-represented aligns with our firm’s commitment to serving diverse communities and advocating for justice,” Cona added.

At the event, audience members had the chance to ask questions and delve deeper into civil-rights advocacy.

“We take seriously consciousness-raising and community education,” Cona said. “Mr. Brewington’s seminar resonated deeply with all in attendance and inspired much discussion as well as plans for action.”
