Dominic Lewis, 10 and a Sayville resident and student in Sunrise Drive Elementary School, recently won the annual Veterans “Red, Write and Blue” essay contest sponsored by Cona Elder Law, an elder law firm in Melville.
Receiving nearly 500 entries from 30 LI school districts on the topics "My Military Hero" and “What America Means to Me”, Cona Elder Law awarded Dominic a $ 100 gift card and certificate during their Veterans celebration at the LI State Veterans Home in Stony Brook.
"We selected Dominic's essay because of how clearly he expressed his thoughts about what his uncle went through and his reaction to those experiences," says Melissa Negrin-Wiener, Esq., partner at Cona Elder Law. For example, Dominic learned that even after leaving the service his uncle attended the funerals of hundreds of soldiers to complete the 21 gun salute. As Dominic saluted the crowd, it was evident that he had a new appreciation for his military hero.
Dominic's mother Jeana Lewis encouraged him to write the essay as she says "it was a good exercise to help him improve his writing. It was also a good way for him to learn more about his uncle."
The Salute to Veterans, Red Write and Blue Essay Contest gives young people the opportunity to learn more about their country and the freedoms and liberties they enjoy every day. This type of intergenerational program gives our youth the chance to learn from their heroes, the very people who made this country what it is today.
