Cona Elder Law Hosts Library Seminar Series: “Protecting Special Needs Children for a Lifetime”

Children with special needs generally require care and supervision for their entire lives, not just in childhood.  As many may be unable to work, children with special needs are often reliant on governmental benefit programs and financial support from their caregivers and loved ones.

During an intergenerational seminar for families sponsored by Dowling College, Paul Hyl, Esq., special needs and estate planning attorney at Cona Elder Law based in Melville, will review some of the legal and financial implications of caring for a special needs individual and discuss the roles to be played by grandparents, parents, siblings and nieces and nephews.

The program will be held at the following libraries:

9/11/12 - 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm – WEST BABYLON PUBLIC LIBRARY (211 Route 109, West Babylon, NY)

9/13/12 - 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm – SOUTHAMPTON ROGERS MEMORIAL LIBRARY (91 Coopers Farm Road, Southampton, NY)

Some of the topics Mr. Hyl will discuss include: estate planning, governmental benefit programs such as SSI and Medicaid, protecting assets without losing government benefits, guardianship proceedings, wills and special needs trusts. “Planning for children with Special Needs is complex and confusing.  The seminar will help prepare family members for what lies ahead, including options to consider and how to properly plan,” says Mr. Hyl.

Speaker Craig Marcott, CFP, Special Needs Advisor in Melville, will present information on post-transition planning and housing options as well as financial planning.    Studies show that 62% of parents and caregivers don’t have a plan for where the person they support with developmental or mental disabilities will live when the caregiver gets older.
