Complimentary Private Session to Determine Benefit Eligibility
Veterans and their spouses or widows may be eligible for a valuable government benefit known as Aid and Attendance that will pay up to $ 1,850 a month to help defray the rising costs of care at home or in an assisted living facility. Many are unfamiliar with the benefit so they’re not taking advantage of it.
In recognition of Veterans Day, Cona Elder Law, a leading elder law and estate planning firm in Melville, LI, will sponsor a free program for veterans and their spouses at the new Susan C. Snowe Caregiver Resource Center on Tuesday, November 13. The Center is located at Cona Elder Law’s offices – 225 Broad Hollow Rd., Suite 200, Melville, LI.
Attendees will learn more about the Aid and Attendance benefit during a discussion led by Melissa Negrin-Wiener, Esq., Cona Elder Law partner, from 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM. Light refreshments will be served.
Veterans and spouses who are interested in a private complimentary conference to determine if they meet the income/asset and other requirements for the Aid and Attendance government benefit can sign up for conferences between 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM. Participants will be asked to bring specific documents for review.
Registration is necessary for both the seminar and the private sessions. RSVP to Moriah Farrell at 631-390-5000 or RSVP@conalaw.com.
During the event, Michael Haynes, Coordinator of Government Affairs and Public Policy at Long Island Cares, The Harry Chapin Food Bank, will speak on their Military Appreciation Tuesday Program, which supplies Long Island Veterans and their families with groceries. Attendees are asked to bring a non-perishable food item that will be donated to Long Island Cares. Drop off boxes will be available at Cona Elder Law on November 13th.
For the past three years, the VA accredited attorneys at Cona Elder Law have offered their services on a pro bono basis to help nearly 200 veterans and their spouses/widows over age 65 access this important benefit. “The key to obtaining these benefits lies in accurately completing the complex and lengthy application, which requires a thorough knowledge of the financial and service criteria,” says Melissa Negrin-Wiener, Esq. “Nearly 75% of the applications we’ve completed were for widows of veterans and mostly for care in assisted living facilities.”
Those who attend the November 13th event will have the opportunity to view the Susan C. Snowe Caregiver Resource Center offering a range of elder care and caregiver information and resources from various organizations, such as assisted living communities, home health care organizations, financial services, insurance and more.
The Center is open to the public on Monday, Tuesday and Fridays from 9 AM – 5 PM. Visitors will have an opportunity to speak with an elder law attorney at no charge on Tuesdays between 3 – 5 PM.
