On Friday, May 6th, attorneys and staff of Cona Elder Law, elder law and estate planning firm in Melville, and children from the West Side School in Cold Spring Harbor honored Mother's Day with a visit to the female residents of Woodbury Center for Health Care.
Cona Elder Law received carnation corsages donated by Martelli’s Florist & Gift Shop, Huntington, and teamed up with the students to hand-deliver and pin the flowers on the ladies at the nursing home. The residents were delighted to interact with the children and receive the flowers. The children also created Mother’s Day cards for the residents during the program.
“What a wonderful way to celebrate Mother’s Day,” said Sara Meringolo, a 98 year old resident at Woodbury Center. “We appreciate that the law firm would think of us.”
Most of the women who participated in the event were in their late 80’s.
Cona Elder Law believes in bringing young and old together as they can learn so much from each other. “As advocates for seniors, we sponsor an ongoing series of community and charitable programs, such as this Mother’s Day event, that help to improve the quality of life for our seniors,” says Jennifer Cona, Esq., managing partner at Cona Elder Law. “In turn, the children learn to appreciate the older generation and the value of community involvement.”
Recently, the firm launched Senior Dreams Come True, a program that grants wishes to low income seniors. Recent grants include a new mattress for a man suffering from back pain, free limousine service for a mother to visit her disabled daughter at a group home upstate, and airfare for an elderly woman to visit out-of-state family.
“Many thanks to Cona Elder Law for contributing to our seniors and making it a special day for our residents while giving the children such a rewarding experience,” explains Frederick White, Administrator, Woodbury Center for Health Care. Therapeutic recreation director, Kim Gioia commented that reaching out to their residents makes them feel special and part of the community.
