A health care proxy is a document where you name someone to make health care decisions for you if you’re unable to make your own decisions. If you are able to communicate your wishes, your physician will still listen to you. However, if you become unable to communicate your wishes, your health care agents, under the health care proxy, will be the person making all health care decisions on your behalf. In New York State, you can only have one health care agent at a time. So make sure if you do have a health care proxy, it doesn’t name two people acting together. If it does, you’d want to have it looked at and redone.
