After a loved one passes away, there are a number of things you could do before you meet with an attorney.
• You should first contact the Social Security Administration, the Veterans Administration and any pension companies to advise them of your loved ones passing.
• Contact any credit card companies so that the cards can be cancelled to prevent fraud and unauthorized use.
• Begin to collect the decedent’s mail, looking for financial statements, bank records bills and other important financial information.
• Look for any wills trusts or other estate planning documents so that the decedent’s wishes can be carried out.
Then you can meet with an attorney to go through the next steps of the estate administration process.
