The “Red, WRITE & Blue” essay contest for Veterans Day got Fifth-grade Sunrise Drive student Dominic Lewis thinking. He had learned about the contest sponsored by the Elder Law and Estate Planning firm of Genser Dubow Genser and Cona and that is was open to all students in both elementary and middle school grades. One of the two topics the essay contestants might choose: “What American Means to Me” or “My Military Hero” opened his mind to a possibility. Dominic wanted to ask his uncle, a Vietnam Veteran, questions that might help him compose an essay. With that plan in mind, he chose the topic: “My Military Hero.”
Among the approximately 500 entrees received—the combined total submitted from middle schools and elementary schools in Suffolk County—Dominic’s 545-word essay (see attached) based upon his Uncle Peter’s experiences was so insightful that Dominic won First Place at the elementary school level. During the recent Veterans Day Celebration held at the Long Island State Veterans Home, Stony Brook University, Dominic read his essay aloud to all those present and was awarded a certificate for his thoughtful composition.
During the celebration, Melissa Negrin-Wiener, Esq of Genser, Dubow, Genser, & Cona was doubly impressed. “His essay was heartfelt and the reading of his essay was even more spectacular,” she said.
