While we are enduring this pandemic, and forced to limit physical contact with our elder loved ones, we are relying on video “chatting” technology to catch-up, keep them company and stay connected. This also provides an ideal opportunity to assess their status and needs. Here are some things to look out for:
Are there any changes in your loved one’s appearance? Perhaps they are not as “put together” as they used to be, but are they still taking the necessary steps to care for themselves each morning?
Take a good look around- is the house clean? Do things look cluttered and/or “piling up”?
Ask if the household bills are being paid on time. Are they receiving late notices or leaving mail unopened?
Changes in mobility are common with aging adults, but some signs of lessened movement are more concerning than others. Are there signs of physical pain or evidence your loved one is unsteady on their feet?
You may be able to gauge a person’s emotional well-being through the screen. Note if your loved one seems withdrawn or has lost interest in at-home activities or eating.
Any of these changes could begin the conversation about long-term care wishes and plans. Make sure your loved one has a Power of Attorney, Health Care Proxy and Living Will so that you have the legal authority to help as well as the ability to get information about finances and health care.
